The Mixstory Bass DJ Subwoofer Active 12-Inch is a powered low-frequency extension speaker designed for the DJ who performs in environments where the full-range main speakers do not deliver adequate bass impact — small clubs, event spaces, outdoor marquees, and DJ booth monitoring situations where a pair of full-range tops produces a tonally incomplete sound that lacks the physical bass energy that dance music requires. Adding a dedicated active subwoofer to a full-range speaker system extends the system’s low-frequency output below the natural rolloff point of the main speakers, providing the sub-bass content below 80 Hz that kick drums, bass lines, and electronic music sub-bass layers require for full physical impact. Mixstory’s 12-inch woofer is housed in a ported cabinet tuned to 38 Hz — extending usable bass output to this frequency with a flat response through the crossover region — and driven by a 400W Class D amplifier. Class D amplifier topology provides the high power density the bass application requires in a compact, lightweight package without the heat generation and inefficiency that Class AB designs produce at high continuous power levels. A variable crossover with frequency adjustment between 80 Hz and 180 Hz allows the subwoofer’s upper frequency limit to be set precisely at the rolloff point of the main speakers, ensuring a seamless transition in the bass region with no gap and no overlap. A 180-degree phase switch inverts the polarity of the subwoofer’s output signal, compensating for the polarity reversal that subwoofer placement distance can introduce relative to the main speakers — the correct phase setting is found by listening for the position that produces the most bass impact and the least cancellation in the crossover region. Balanced XLR signal pass-through allows the incoming signal to be routed to the main speakers simultaneously from the subwoofer’s output connector without a signal splitter.
